After the vuvuzela, this is the real sound of South Africa!

Hugh Masekela plus The Mahotella Queens

Hugh Masekela plus The Mahotella Queens

6 Nov - 20 Nov

A landmark concert bringing the warmth and optimism of South African music to the stage through two of the Rainbow Nation’s finest artists.

Hugh Masekela has been at the heart of the music of his country since the 1960s through the years of struggle to liberation; his soaring, joyful trumpet sound that nourishes the soul and frees the spirit, continues as an expression of resistance and a celebration of resilience.  Hugh Masekela has worked with many giants, hitting the big time with "Grazin' in the Grass" and achieving broad recognition for the trumpet sound of Paul Simon’s seminal album “Graceland”.  This is the first opportunity for a number of years to catch South Africa's most enduring musical ambassador with his band in the UK following his World Cup opening concert performance.  “The man with the horn”, is a living legend, a genius and great performer with the ability to entrance audiences all over the world.

The Mahotella Queens are an award-winning vocal trio that has exerted enormous influence on the musical life of South Africa and will be performing a stunning a cappella set.  Recognised for three decades of energetic and emancipating music, their mesmerizing sound inspired the people of their country to dance and dream through the dark years of apartheid.  Theirs is not the artificially manufactured success of mass hype; instead it is innovation, perseverance, hard work and musical magic that qualify them to be crowned as queens by the ordinary people of South Africa.

"…a musician of phenomenal grace and power: intricate and fiery on flugelhorn and still blessed with a voice that can strip the leaves from the trees." - The Independent

"I turn around to watch the crowd - young kids, funky young women and plump mothers, old grannies and tough, wannabe gangstas. I am not the only one with tears in my eyes." - London Evening Standard
