Efterklang and Northern Sinfonia: Piramida Concerts and special guest John Grant
23 - 30 Oct 2012
EFTERKLANG are planning another epic scale project originating from and informed by a special expedition undertaken by the band in 2011. They found their inspiration in a former Russian mining settlement called Piramida on Spitsbergen, just 1,000km from the North Pole - a place with more polar bears than people and possessing the world’s northernmost grand piano.
Completely abandoned in 1998 Piramida now stands as a ghost town. Efterklang became aware of it in spring 2010 and were immediately drawn to these desolate, modern ruins of the Arctic. Mads, Casper and Rasmus spent nine days collecting more than 1000 sounds from Piramida’s former fixtures and institutions: the hospital, power plant, swimming pool, canteen, fuel tanks, sawmill, and that high latitude grand piano, which still stands in the settlement’s concert hall.
MBM's PIRAMIDA CONCERT UK tour is an exciting and innovative project from this ever resourceful and imaginative group. They have played as a rock band throughout the world and also specialise in wonderful integrated orchestral projects. This time EFTERKLANG collaborate with the 35-piece Northern Sinfonia, orchestra of The Sage Gateshead, conducted by the much in demand André de Ridder, to create a concert that will push musical boundaries, while creating an experience that will reward everyone.
EFTERKLANG have engaged classical arrangers Missy Mazzoli (Kronos Quartet, Victoire), Karsten Fundal (Under Byen, Oh Land) and Daníel Bjarnason (Sigur Rós, Múm) to create music for band and orchestra from the outset. Simply orchestrating tunes they have written is not the EFTERKLANG way, and the world of music is much the richer for it. For this special concert, the Danish trio will be performing as a six-piece, augmented by Peter Broderick (piano), Katinka Fogh Vindelev (choir) and Budgie (drums)of Siouxsie and the Banshees & The Creatures . EFTERKLANG will be also be joined by a specially invited guest artist to open.
EFTERKLANG are a ‘must see’ live act and this tour will not be repeated in the UK. If you have seen them before this is an opportunity to see something unique. If you haven’t seen EFTERKLANG before, this is your ‘must see’ moment.

"A near perfect show." - The Sydney Morning Herald
